The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the global trade association for merchant shipowners, has modified its stance towards the ratification by governments of the International Maritime Organization ballast water management convention (IMO BWMC), which has still not yet entered into force despite being adopted more than ten years ago.

Shipping lines are concerned about the Inter­national Maritime Organiza­tion’s mea­sures to help protect the environment, which are due to become stricter soon. The IMO’s marine environment protection committee (MEPC) is holding a meeting in mid-October at which it will ­address these matters. This has prompted the Inter­national Chamber of Shipping (ICS) to make the most of the oppor­tu­ni­ty to draw attention to its position.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has called on IMO member states to consider shipowners’ concerns about the implementation of an avalanche of new environmental regulations, which are about to impact on ship operations at more or less the same time. This plea comes in advance of a critical intergovernmental meeting at the IMO in October.

La ICS (International Chamber of Shipping), cuyos miembros gestionan el 80% de la flota mercante mundial, ha presentado su informe anual de 2014, sobre política marítima y análisis de las normas aparecidas durante el año 2013. La ICS es la principal asociación internacional de armadores, particularmente dedicada a participar e influir en las instituciones y organismos con capacidad para dictar leyes y reglamentos que afecten a sus actividades. Cuando se trata de participar en asuntos de carácter laboral, la ICS actúa como ISF (International Shipping Federation).

Además de los capítulos del informe dedicados a la aplicación de las nuevas normas de la OMI sobre el uso de combustibles de bajo contenido en azufre en las zonas de control de emisiones a partir del 1 de enero de 2015; de la puesta en práctica del Convenio de Gestión de Agua de Lastre; de los problemas surgidos en la aplicación del Convenio de Trabajo Marítimo; y del artículo dedicado a analizar la situación de la piratería en las zonas endémicas, el informe de la ICS abre con un artículo del presidente, el japonés Masamichi Morooka, cargado de valor informativo.
