The first pilot truck caravan to test the overland trade route from Uzbekistan through Kyrgyzstan to China set off from Tashkent on 30 October, ahead of the upcoming implementation of the TIR system in China. The caravan is travelling via Tashkent, Andizhan, Osh and Irkeshtam and will arrive in Kashghar later this week.

An increasing amount of attention is being paid to the development of rail transport in Uzbekistan. The state-owned rail corporation Uzbekistan Temir Yullari (UTY) is to invest around USD 541 million in modernising its rolling stock between 2015 and 2019, according to a government programme.

The World Bank’s board has agreed to a USD 195 million IBRD loan for Uzbekistan's Pap-Angren railway project, which foresees the construction of a 124 km single track rail link between the two locations. The scheme's objectives are to reduce transport costs and increase transport capacity and reliability through the construction of a rail link between the Uzbek part of the Ferghana valley and the remainder of the country.
