The German state railway Deutsche Bahn recently assembled its 500th long freight train at the Maschen marshalling yard, near Hamburg (Deutschland). The up to 835 m long train then headed for the Fredericia yard in Denmark. This is the only corridor in Germany where trains of this length have been permitted to operate since December 2012. The maximum train length in the remainder of the country is 740 m.

Truck-on-train (ro-mo) services in Austria used to be marketed under the Ökombi brand. Now Ökombi GmbH has been merged with Rail Cargo Austria AG (RCA), and the country’s state railway corporation ÖBB could set another milestone in its efforts to simplify the railfreight haulage sector in Europe. The merger has resulted in a single point of contact for customers, as well as leaner structures and an effective, cross-border collaboration in railfreight transport for a wide range of commodities. Ökombi, which used to be Europe’s largest provider of truck-on-train services, conveyed around 300,000 road vehicle units last year.

The truck-on-train service (rolling motorway) between Salzburg (Austria) and Trieste (Italy) has been making a major contribution towards reducing that corridor’s amount of commercial traffic for many years. Every day, up to three trains in each direction are used by different forwarding companies (mainly from Turkey) to convey some of their shipments.
