Distorted competition

Distorted competition

Miércoles, 26 de Marzo de 2014

The seas are becoming choppier in container transport. Not only are shipping lines defending their market shares with greater vigour than ever before, the competition between the top 3 European container ports is also heating up (see ITJ 01-04/2014, p. 15). Melanie Schultz van Haegen, the Dutch minister for infrastructure and the environment, most recently had some strong words to say about the matter: due to the state support provided by the Belgian and German governments to their relevant seaports, the latter benefit from an «unfair» competitive edge over the port of Rotterdam.

The port of Rotterdam said it is missing out on almost 1 million teu's worth of containers a year because ports in Germany and Flanders receive financial support from their governments. Allard Castelein, chief executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said these were the finding of the study ‘Level playing field’, commissioned by the Dutch ministry of infrastructure and the environment.

United Waalhaven Terminals (UWT) and the Port of Rotterdam Authority (Netherlands) have agreed to construct a new quay on Bunschotenweg. The quay will be dug on the Johan Friso Haven and will be able to accommodate short sea vessels as well as inland vessels with a draught of 7 m and a length of 135 m. The quay will be primarily designed for handling empty containers, but will also be suitable for lifting full ones.
