Costs and capacity (liner / container shipping cost)

Costs and capacity (liner / container shipping cost)

Lunes, 30 de Octubre de 2017

The recovery will come for liner shipping. That, at least, is certain for Drewry. The analyst argues, however, that an upswing will be based on other foundations than usual in the industry in the past. The focus will be on costs, not on earnings. Container shipping will likely recover towards the end of 2016 or from 2017 onwards. So much for the good news that Drewry offers us in its Container Annual Review & Forecast 2014/15, which was recently published.

Drewry’s Container Annual Review & Forecast 2014/15 foresees a recovery of the container industry by late 2016 or 2017. However, the analyst says an upswing is to be based around the formation of the new mega alliances and the continued reduction of unit costs rather than the matching of supply and demand at the individual trade route level.

The outcome of the European Commission’s latest accusation of price fixing against ocean carriers is far from clear, based on the information that has been circulated to date, the English analyst Drewry points out. According to the analyst, ocean carriers will argue that they are only doing what they have always done, namely notifying customers of future price increases in good faith, which was even a statutory requirement for conference carriers under the old UNCTAD code.
